Welcome

An 13ú Comhdháil Idirnáisiúnta Móna
Céad Míle Fáilte

The Irish National Committee of the International Peat Society and the Irish Peat Society would like to extend to all participants in the 2008 Peat Congress the traditional Irish one hundred thousand welcomes. We look forward to welcoming you most sincerely to the Congress in June 2008. It will take place in two charming towns, Tullamore and Athlone, in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The location of the Congress is in the heart of Ireland’s midland peatlands and in an area of traditional culture and heritage.

Every four years, through its Congress, the International Peat Society provides an opportunity for peatland and peat scientists and practitioners to share knowledge and experience with the wider peatland family. It also provides opportunities for personal interaction, informal meetings and exchanges of view, and to see the faces behind the e-mails of the previous four years.

The purpose of this Second Circular is to stimulate your interest in attending the Tullamore Congress. It is also the Call for Papers which hopefully will cause you to set out on paper the results of your recent research and work so that it will be with us by 30th September 2007. The Scientific Committee is hoping for a large number of high-quality papers and posters outlining the latest research and practice.
We hope the Congress will be a forward-looking event, showcasing state-of-the-art research on all aspects of peat and peatlands, and seeking to look to the future of peatland conservation, utilisation and restoration. Its theme ‘After Wise Use – the Future of Peatlands’ is meant to take the debate on peat and peatlands forward from the 12th Congress whose theme was ‘Wise Use of Peatlands’.

We look forward to seeing you at what we think will be a stimulating and enjoyable week. 2008 will mark the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the I.P.S. and we hope to celebrate the occasion appropriately.

Organising Committee

Secretary General’s Introduction

Photo of Jakko SilpolaThe I.P.S. welcomes scientists, students, teachers, government officials, company technicians and executives, editors and all other stakeholders related to peat and peatlands to the 13th International Peat Congress in Tullamore, Ireland – evergreen Emerald Isle!

There is a continuously increasing interest in peat and peatlands from many perspectives, including those relating to ecology, biology, hydrology, climate, food and energy production, health and recreation. In the previous Peat Congress, in 2004 in Tampere, there were over 250 abstracts dealing with all the above-mentioned aspects and over 500 participants joined the versatile event. Now we expect an even wider representation from all over the world.

Peatlands play an important role in the biosphere. They interact with fundamental life-support processes, involving biogeochemical cycling, food-chain support, hydrological dynamics and water quality, and provide habitats for many characteristic plant and animal species. Peatlands are associated with some of the world’s least as well as some of its most productive ecosystems, and they are found from high cold-temperate latitudes to the tropics.

The International Peat Society (I.P.S.) is an international, non-governmental and non-profit organization with approximately 1,300 members from 38 countries. The society is dedicated to fostering the advancement, exchange and communication of scientific, technical and social knowledge and understanding for the wise use of peatlands and peat. Scientific, industrial and regulatory stakeholders of all areas related to peat and peatlands are represented in it. The I.P.S. invites You to join the Congress and also to join the I.P.S.!

Our Irish hosts will surely do their best to guarantee perfect services for all the participants and their guests. You are warmly welcomed to Tullamore, Ireland!

Jaakko Silpola, M.Sc. (Agr.), MBA
Secretary General of the I.P.S.
